Toxins, Rashes and Even Lower Energy Levels I spoke too hastily yesterday about being over the hump. This morning I woke up with a small rash. This indicates the cleansing process is proceeding apace. Scarping my tongue this morning, I cleaned off copious gobs of gook! My teeth were coated as much as they have been. I've tried to keep up two quarts of water a day. But that's increasingly difficult to do. Every time I drink, I know that within the hour I'll have intestinal distress with bloating, mild nausea, belching and gas. Unfortunately this doesn't go away until the third week of a fast. These are classical fasting symptoms since the intestinal tract is lined with a rain forest of flora and fauna. It seems like I can hear them saying "Look what Bill has sent us. Let's get busy, do our thing and secrete some byproducts!" Fortunately you can get by with as little as one quart a day and still maintain the electrolyte balance. A patient who has the severely elevated cholesterol got an all over rash day before yesterday that woke him up in the middle of the night scratching his skin raw in some places. Thank goodness my minor rash is nothing like that. The doctor brought him some oatmeal to bathe in. Today he said the bath was very soothing. I asked if he was going to eat the oatmeal. He said he would be tempted since he's mentioned being hungry all along. He was on a "challenging" diet like my son in law, e.g. a dinner plate of chicken wings for a TV snack! Experience shows that the richer the diet prior to the fast, the more frequent and severe the withdrawal symptoms. Since my diet was in relatively good shape, this hasn't been the case for me at all. My energy level continues to subside but not precipitously so. This morning I walked up to the front desk to leave my laundry. That was enough to feel like getting back in bed for a rest. I'm spending more and more time there. I get up to skim USA Today, read one story in Garrison Keillor's book, or prepare this Fasting Odyssey entry. One of our fasters got great news today. She is a Type II diabetic who has been on multiple medications and sticking herself with a needle four times a day for years. This morning Fuhrman told her she had cleansed enough that she was officially no longer a diabetic. If she stays on the plant based diet after she leaves, she'll never have to go back to that regime again. She was literally glowing! |
